I just bought an iBook G4-933 and installed an airport card to use with my NetGear WGR614. This is my first attempt at wireless networking.

So far, everything seems to be working great. I can connect to the internet and email perfectly. I can also connect to my desktop mac upstairs as well, File transfers from my desktop to my laptop wirelessly is very fast, but the other direction (file transfers from my laptop to the desktop) is painfully slow, if it doesn't lock up.

When I connect my iBook wired to my network, file transfers between computers are perfect both directions, but I can't seem to upload wirelessly from my laptop.

My cable modem service is RoadRunner, and my setup is like this: cable modem --> NetGear WGR614 g --> old 16-port 10/100 switch (because i have 8 ports around my house) --> desktop g4 1ghz. I haven't tried eliminating the switch from the mix, but I can't imagine that would make a difference. Maybe I should try it.

Also, I do not have any encryption turned on...kindof intimidated by it I guess.

Use the Software Updates control panel to make sure that you have installed all the Apple Security updates. (You might have to check more than once, since Software Update sometimes only gives you one update at a time). There is a recent security update which incidentally was supposed to address the issue you describe.
