Here's the setup:
"Server"
G5/10.3.2/Filemaker Pro 5.5
"Client"
G4/10.2.8/Filemaker Pro 5.5
The client mounts the server via smb, can see the databases, but when double clicked it asks to select an application. When done, it gives a weird error and doesn't open database or Filemaker Pro.
Is this easily solved with getting FMP 6? Or will that not make a difference?

Filemaker sharing has worked for several versions already.
You need to share the database by either running Filemaker Server or sharing the database from within Filemaker itself if it is being accessed by more than one user at a time. When Filemaker databases are shared, there is no need to mount the server volume- use the "Open Remote" command instead.
What is the "weird error" you're getting? Without listing the actual error, it's tough to be helpful. Are the databases named with the .fp5 extension?
-Why are you using SMB to connect two Macs instead of native Apple file sharing?

I know this has worked in many other enviorments. We have some PC people who store their FMPro 6 database on a shared server space that has both netatalk and smb running. However, the place we work is soon to be turning off netatalk (appletalk) from the routers/switches thus requiring smb to allow sharing, not appletalk.
It seems that when we mount the smb share, the fmpro 5.5 databases are not associated with fmpro. On the host machine they work fine, but it's impossible to launch the database from a remote machine using smb. I'll try it again and get the code.
