I'm pulling my hair out over this, and there wasn't much to begin with!
I am a recent OSX covert, coming from years of OS9. I have a firewire WD external HD hooked up to my G4 with Panther, and everything is working fine. But, I have a co-worker using X v10.1 that needs complete read/write access to this HD over our local network, and he keeps getting permissions errors. I have no clue what to do, and I'm having trouble searching for information. Probably just using the wrong search terms.
I have used Get Info to changes the ownership and permissions to read/write. I've tried different settings under Owner, Group and Others, setting them all to read/write. There's even a check box for 'Ignore ownership on this volume' and it is checked.
My co-worker can open and save files to and from this drive, but he can't create a file or folder on it. This whole permissions and ownership thing is so confusing. In os9, it seemed so much easier...an external drive over the network wass just like it was installed in your own computer.
Can someone help or point me to some help to understand how it all works?
Thanks a lot!
Dan
