I just bought a new SMC SMC2804WBRP-G Barricade g wireless router.....
But when I try and configure the WEP on it....I put in the passphrase to generate the keys and all the keys come up like password.....just the standard *********
Not this will not do my Apple powerbook any good.....Does anyone know how I can see the keys/
I have tried to disable broadcast and it does not make a diference....and when I set up my friends wireless on a Linksys, the keys came up fine

Any help would be great

Thanks in advance

SMC and Linksys use different code in their boxes, so they do things differently. And since nobody releases their code for "peer review," it's impossible to know how repeatable, tightly coded, etc. their key generating code is.

Here's what you do. Go to Apple to download WEP Key Maker. It takes a passphrase and gives you a hex key, which you can enter on ANY hardware, including SMC's.

With WEP Key Maker, you have the repeatability that's needed for security-and not getting locked out of your own stuff!

Put the key into the router as is, but on your Mac, put a $ sign in front of it.

Which versions of AirPort software don't support the little option box that says "this is a hex value?" It's been a while since I saw an Admin Utility version that didn't have that check box, so I can't remember. I must have just assumed that everyone would see the box and make that connection...
