I can't seem to find the correct words or question to ask Apple Help.

How can I log into my computer from another machine say at a University ?
I want to able to transfer files, videos, graphics etc that I make in both locations. I am only allowed limited space on the Uni servers for short periods, thus I need to be able to send receive Gigs of stuff.
I don't have either DVD reader on my machine or an external storage device ( nor can I afford to buy one yet) only a CD writer in my machine
The Uni has the latest best G4's & G5's with DVD Writers etc whereas I have a meek G3 350 mghzt., so it seems logical to network the machines.
I haven't as yet found the right person to ask on campus yet !

It depends on how your home computer is connected to the internet. Are you on a dial-up connection, directly connected to cable/dsl, or behind a router?

Unless your computer is on the same local network (as in same campus, on Ethernet) as the lab computers you won't want to pass Gigs of data across the network. It would take way too much time and would probably be frowned upon in the lab as you'd be tying up their production machines for data transfers.

Your best option is to buy a DVD reader for your home machine and burn stuff to DVD at the lab to take home. If you want to take stuff from home back to lab then buy a DVD burner for home. You should be able to get a DVD burner for around $200, it would be a good investment.

For reference, if your home machine was on DSL capable of 150KBps download (pretty standard) it would take over 100 hours to transfer one Gigabyte of data.

If you were on a local network running at 100Mbps you could transfer the same data in a few minutes.

And heres me thinking that we are living in the information age, the so- called information super highway, more sexed up hype ?

Yes I'm on 512k at home behind a network router. I don't yet know what data feed system the campus is on only that a lecturer told me she is upable to upload/download her own stuff to and from home. I'm yet to learn if this applies to Postgrads as well.

Sure would love to own a DVD Writer, maybe after I get thru paying my bills I'll be able to do it, although that looks like about 3 months away at the very least, maybe I'll have to look at compressing my videos and write them to CD ?
