I know there are various hacked drivers for wireless devices on OS X. My understanding is that because many of the devices use the same chip sets that it allows people to create their own solutions to use them based on existing supported devices.
I have a friend who has an iMac and needs to connect to her neighbors wireless network, with their permission, to download some things she needs. She does not need it to be a permanent thing so buying a device is not something I am looking for advice on.

We plugged in a Microsoft USB MN-510 receiver and it came up recognized by the X.3 system profiler. I was wondering if this was a good sign of the device being able to work with some/any of the various hacked drivers out there. Does anyone know what chip set it uses or what I could do to get it to work on the iMac?

If it's picked up by the system it'll most likely work with no problems.

That is what i hoped but there is no way to know just by plugging it in.
The airport software isn't made to configure this USB device and the network panel in prefs does not show it as an option. Unless there is a hacked utility to help configure the MS device I won't be able to find out. So my original problem still stands.

well I haven't found a solution for unsupported USB wireless but this might help others down the road with PC and PCI cards not listed as mac compatible
