Hi,

I've got a tricky question. I connect to the net over Airport (G4 IGhz 12inch, 10.2.7, airport extreme card) and the dial-up modem inthe airport base station. It works great

I also use an HP2100M laserjet, printing via Appletalk over ethernet (I installed a JetDirect card) with ethernet cable. It works great.

But how do I do both at the same time? Currently if I want to print (using built-in ethernet) I have to switch to a location I set up with built-in ethernet selected as a port, and Appletalk selected.

If I add built-in ethernet port to the network port configurations list for the Airport location I set up (which usually just has the Airport selected in the list) then PPPoE gets selected. I'm then not allowed to select Appletalk (it says you can't use it if PPPoE is selected, and the internet connection can't be made without PPPoE).

Hope this isn't too confusing. Bottom line is how can I use my Airport set-up and print to the laserjet over an ethernet cable direct from the powerbook without having to switch between locations and go offline?

Would it in fact be possible to plug the laserjet into the ethernet port of the airport base station and print over airport?

Thanks to any networking gurus out there who can help out!

Yes. Plug the HP into the Airport's ethernet port.

If connecting to the Airport Base Station is inconvenient (because of location), I think you should be able to configure your OS X system to use the airport for your Internet traffic while simultaneously running AppleTalk over the built-in Ethernet. In your network port configuration list, you would need the Airport entry to appear above the built-in Ethernet entry (just drag it up above it. ) You just have to change the "Configured:" option for the Ethernet port from PPPoE to DHCP, and then visit the AppleTalk and enable it. Since the airport will be handling your Internet traffic, it really doesn't matter whether your Ethernet port is configured for PPPoE or DHCP, since it's actually used for neither. I use a similar configuration on a PowerBook OS X 10.2 to access AppleTalk-based file sharing with a really old OS 8 desktop (though I haven't specifically tried to get to the laser printer in that way.)

Hey that make sense and it works! It didn't before but may just have been a rogue dial-up attempt.

Many thanks for your help and isn't OSX elegant?
