Had a weird problem with 2 G5s where they were almost unable to do any sort of web browsing, networking, etc. Incredibly slow and painful to use. The switch was set to autodupluex and autosense. When we set it to static 10mbit and autoduplex (full) it went back to normal. Any ideas if there is a conflict?

Do you have spanning tree turned on on that switch? If so, you should turn it off.

My other suggestion would be to make sure that the cable is wired correctly. I have seen a couple of cases where a singe pair was swapped. 10x would work fine, but 100x failed utterly.

It sounds like classic failed autonegotiation. (Believe it or not, there are no ratified standards for autonegotiation!)

You have two options: one is to manually set the speed and duplex on both the Mac and the switch. The other is to install an intermediary hub or switch, in the hopes that that intermediate hub will be able to properly autonegotiate with the main switch, and properly autonegotiate with the Mac.

This problem is very common with Cisco switches, by the way. Other brands don't seem to have this problem.
