I don't know why I never posted this before, but ... NEVER, under any condition, purchase a Microsoft router. I have a four port router, similiar to this one, but not wireless (MS Router).

It was cheap, probably around $45-$50 (USD), but drops connections daily. Sometimes more than once a day. My roommates and I purchased it because we were broke college students, and at the time it was the cheapest one best buy offered. We thought, its a router, why not. We should have just bought a linksys.

At first we would call our cable provider (Charter Comm.) and complain to them, but it wasn't our modem, it was our router they determined. We have to unplug the power from the router any time it goes down, wait about 30-60 seconds, and restart all computers to have access to the internet once again.

It's annoying, but not worth replacing at this point. The best buy in my area must have known this; they no longer stock MS routers.

Have you checked to see if there are any firmware upgrades for the router?

If it's really the router (and not another issue, like having another DHCP server running on the same network) then it's obviously defective...you should return it.
I do not like those green links and spam.
I do not like them, Sam I am.

there is no firmware available from the microsoft website, you cannot even find any info on it - thats why i had to make a link to the wireless model that looks like the one we have. At this point, its far to late to return but we did have our modem replaced after a month of service thinking it was that, but it never got any better. i guess thats what happens sometimes.

I have a friend who works over at the mothership of the Dark Side of Computing, so when I was shopping for a new router, I asked him what he thought of the MS ones. He told me they were crap and to steer clear. I ended up with a D-Link that has been somewhat problematic (I think I have it working now that I turned off that goofy Super-G mode).

Netgears are good. My linksys locked up every 4 days or so.

Netgear, maybe once every 6 months.

My Netgear router died on me. Twice. I haven't bothered to send it in for replacement the second time, I just got a D-Link instead.
