Hi All,
I'm trying to network an old Victorian house that has been divided into two really big units that are each about 110 feet long, one over the other. The DSL line comes into the upstairs unit and is shared via a single Airport base station with the downstairs unit (my place). Everyone is able to get the internet via their airport cards or pc equivilent but the printers and scanners are currently unaccessable. I'd like to keep all the printers and gear in a big closet on one end of the house where they are out of the way. 3 of the printers (epson 7600, Kodak 8650ps, and Tectronics phaser 740plus) have ethernet cards and are easy to set up individually with an airport base station and can work as stand alone printers with an assigned IP. That's great and I assume that one can put a router on the base station and connect up all three printers to one base station. My plan is to connect the other printers that don't have ethernet to the G4 via firewire and USB and share them over the airport to the rest of the house. I think that will work for the macs and I don't care about the guy with the pc. Now to my question: I have an epson 836xl scanner that only connects via SCSI. If that's connected to the G4 can I share that over the airport? I'm a photographer and I want to do most of my work on my new G5 and just use the G4 to connect everything up. In fact I'd really like to use the diplay from the G4 as a second diplay for my main workspace. Will I have to operate my G4 remotely to get to the scanner or can I use it over the airport? Does this even make sense? I have one linsys bsr41 router and could possibly make some runs of cat 5 cable under the house but i'm still uncertain about the scanner.
Sorry for the long post and I appreciate in advance any advice the board has to offer.
