I was trying to setup my airport to automatic connect to my wireless network via the network preference pane in system preferences. I select airport card, enter the network name and then the password, but no dice. When I manually connect thought internet connect or the airport menu I have no problem, but I do have to select WEP 128 encryp. hex and I don't get that option in the network preferences. I would like it to connect automaticlly because I am using WEP 128 encryp. and the password is a pain to type in everytime, or copy and paste from the keychain access. I am using a closed network, WEP 128 encryp, Mac OS 10.3, and it is a NETGEAR router (MR814v2). If anyone has a suggestion or knows what I am doing wrong I would greatly appreciate some advice. Thanks

I've noticed that when I have 128-bit encyrption enabled that I don't auto connect either. What I did was join my 128-bit WEP network, type in my password and check the check box to remember the password in keychain. Now when I restart I have to choose my network via the Airport menu on the menu bar to connect.

If I turn encyrption off I join automatically.

I've got the same router as you do and I upgraded to Airport 3.4 also. I wonder if only people using 3rd party routers are having this problem. Or is this an issuse with Apple's Airport base stations too?

Okay, I got the autoconnect to work, if you are using WEP 128 encry. hex passwords you have to put a $ (dollar sign) at the begining of your password when you enter it into the password box under the network preferences pane. Everything works and I am very happy I don't have to enter the whole password everytime.
