I use a college network which has been v.sluggish recently. All users have been told to 'untick use proxy server for LAN' in Internet Options (IE).

Not sure what any of this means but have been told that I need to do this as well. Am one of 2 Mac users in a building of 350 Windows users.

How do I do the equivalent on OS X (I guess somewhere in sys pref?)

System Preferences - Networking - Ethernet or Airport which ever one you use - Proxies and uncheck Web Proxy (HTTP) if you have that checked.
