I’m about to get broadband soon and I’m looking into going wireless for my networking needs.

The problem is that the Airport base station in the UK is very expensive (and doesn’t have a built in ADSL modem…does it???) so I would like some good recommendations on an ADSL modem that will allow me to go wireless with my Pismo PowerBook.

Do you think that I would notice a difference (using a 512k down stream connection) if I stuck in the standard Airport card into my Pismo or would I be better to go for a PC slot card that would give me greater than 11 Mps?

Should I think about an ADSL modem with a hardware firewall?
Is a hardware firewall better than the firewall software that comes with OS Panther?
Would a software Firewall slow down my Mac?
Are there better software Firewalls out there rather than the Panther one?
Should I think about VPN?

I’m a real network Newbie, so I really would appreciate some sound advice.

What, no replies? I too am looking for recommendations for a Wireless ADSL Modem Router. Thus far I have been looking to buy the Linksys WAG54g however there appear to be lots of naegative comments about the reliability of these on the web. So what do people think of the alternatives - DLink, Netgear, Belkin etc?
