Here's one:
For the past month or so my internet connectivity has been shady. I had Time Warner come out to my place and do some diagnostics, and they said that my node and my modem were all working fine as far as they could tell. What they didn't know is I have a Netgear wireless router set up so my roommates can get online.
When my PowerBook is wired straight to the modem everything is fine. However, when it's wired to the router I get very, very poor connectivity. My roommates have also complained of poor wireless and have jumped onto one of the several other networks active in the building. I *think* I've traced the problem back to one of my roommates, who recently built himself a new PC. The weird thing is, the problem seems to be at its worst when he is playing an online game like Unreal Tournament. If he's just online (on my network) the connectivity is intermittent but livable.
My question: is his online game really hogging so much of the network that I would feel the effects when I'm wired to the router? If this is the case, does any one have any suggestions to remedy the situation? Furthermore, is there anything that would lead to his computer just dampening the network that much when he's not playing the game? When he's not on my network, everything is fine for me.
