I have an iMac G4, 800 mhz and my wife has a dell laptop, complete with wireless network card. We want to set up a router so that the iMac can be "hard wired" to the DSL modem and the Dell can operate wirelessly. I bought a DLink 614+ router that worked great for awhile, but I think that it stopped working when I upgraded to 10.3.

I'm connected using DHCP. When I run everything through the router, the laptop gets a wireless connection, but the iMac gets nothing. Do I:

-have to buy another router? If so, what do I buy?
-have to change the settings on my iMac or the router? If so, how?

Earthlink is no help. They want me to buy into their networking stuff. $9.95/month in addition to the DSL charges that I'm already paying.

HELP! My wife starts her doctoral program soon and we really need this to work.

Thanks in advance....

1. Connect the iMac to the router. Make sure that your computers’ operating systems are up to date and that your router has the latest firmware.

Router:

2. Reset your router to its defaults.
3. DO NOT attempt to “Clone MAC Address”.
4. Enable static DHCP and assign your iMac the following static IP address: 192.168.0.100.
5. Under DHCP Server, change the “Starting IP Address” to 192.168.1.101.
6. Leave all other router settings AS IS for now.

iMac:

7. Open System Preferences: Network: TCP/IP
8. While “Configure IPv4” is set to DHCP, record the DNS Servers addresses.
9. Now make the following adjustments:

Configure IPv4: Manually
IP Address: 192.168.0.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.0.1
DNS Servers: (Enter the addresses you recorded in step 8)

At this point, your iMac should have a static address to the Internet. Try connecting the laptop wirelessly using DHCP. If everything works, feel free to adjust encryption settings, etc.

EDIT: I should've told you to hook up your iMac to the router before telling you to make changes to the latter. Doh!
