Sorry if this was covered before - a cursory search didn't turn anything up.

I'm trying to optimize an OS X (10.3.x) file server. Which is faster in terms of throughput - samba (SMB) shares or Apple's AFP protocol?
This is strictly for Mac to Mac file serving - I'm not worried about Windows/Linux accessability nor do I have any client machines running OS 7/8/9.

Associated question: Can SMB shares operate across different subnets, or must the share and client be on the same subnet?

TIA.

im no network guru
but what about nfs
i had afp sharing for awhile, then got tired of having to authenticate all the time
so i setup nfs, and it will share with just certain ips, or a subnet
and no hassle of having to authenticate
and it seems faster then appleshare to me on a 100T network

but then again i dont have any real statistics to back it

i've never used samba, so i cant compare it to that, but i thought samba was for windows compatability
w3rd..

In my simple setup (cheap switched 10/100Mbps network), I find that both AFP and SMB give me the same throughput (cap of 1.8MBps for wireless client, 4MBps avg, 6MBps burst for wired client). Only FTP gives me the fastest average (5MBps) and burst (7MBps).
