At work I'm the lone mac user on a wired network that consists of a linksys 8 port router sharing a high speed internet connection. I'd like to add a wireless access point for my airport ready powerbook and a co-workers gateway laptop.

At home I've got the same type of network setup (all macs of course) and I've simply got an Airport base station plugged into the router. What are my options here at work? (low budget).

Thanks,

lw

You should be able to add a wireless access point to the wired network with no problem. You might have to talk to your IT guy at work if you have one to see if it's ok first.

Just plug the ethernet cable into the WAN (Wide Area Network aka Internet) and you should be good to go. You might have to make a direct ethernet connect to the wireless acess point to setup the wireless settings but after that everything should work.

Just remember if you enable WEP with a password that your PowerBook's Airport card will have to have a dollar sign in the password field as the first value then you can type in the rest of the password with no spaces between the dollar sign and the rest of the password.

Sounds good. Do you have a recommendation for the brand of wireless access point I should buy? Less expensive is preferred.

Thanks for the help,

It all varies by model. If you have a PowerBook with Airport Extreme then you'll have to search the forums about that issue. It seems that some people with Airport Extreme cards can't connect to or have a very bad connection to certian wireless access points.

I use the 802.11b older and slower than the new 802.11g or as Apple calls it Airport Extreme. I use my airport card with a Netgear MR814V2 router which works just fine for me.

Like I said you'll have to do a search to find the brands/models that were causing problems with the Airport Extreme cards but I'm sure there is one access point that would work for you somewhere out there.
