So my parents have an iMac with airport extreme and I helped them set up a dlink DWL 2000AP in order to get it on the network. However, it's pretty clear to me that dlink must not test their products with macs because they've had nothing but problems with it. WPA doesn't work properly on it and they can only connect to the AP if use intererence robustness is on. There are no other wireless networks around, they don't have a 2.4ghz wireless phone or any other devices for that matter, and they don't use the microwave 24/7 or anything.

What access point (linksys, netgear, whatever) will work with Airport Extreme with WPA and without needed the "use interference robustness" turned on? I want to ebay off their AP and get them something that will work flawlessly so they can stop calling me to complain about it . THANKS so much for your suggestions.

If you want something that will work flawlessly with WPA and interference robustness turned off get the Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. It might cost more but it will work flawlessly and your parents will stop calling you The only thing is your parents iMac needs to be running Mac OS X 10.3 aka Panther to use WPA with the Airport Extreme Base Stations.

I'm sure there are cheaper third party options but some of those other routers don't like to work with Apple's Airport Extreme card after updating to Airport 3.4 or 3.4.1 software. You can seach the forums for info about this.

I thought about doing that, but they already have a non-wireless linksys router that they seem happy with so I was hoping to just get an access point rather than another full blown router w/ wireless. Also, the non-wireless router is in the basement with one cat 5 cable going upstairs to where the access point is setup (best coverage from there). So if I were to get the AEBS I'd either have to put it in the basement (poor coverage) or run come more wires upstairs. I don't really like either of those two options.

As an alternative solution, they might consider downgrading to WEP for protection. That way almost all access points will work just fine.

Actually, I have them on WEP right now because of the WPA problems. However, they still have to turn on the "use interference robustness" option to get any kind of connection to the access point even in WEP mode.

Turning on any kind a encryption will decrease the range of the AP and slow peformance. WEP isn't that bad but WPA is better. I use WEP with my Netgear with no problems. There isn't a option to turn on robustness on my Netgear. I can get a signal from across the street with WEP on so it's pretty powerfull. If you are willing to down grade to WEP then just about any old AP will work just fine.
