Hey all. I have a gigabit ethernet TiBook G4 550, airport ready. I may be able to get my hands on an Airport Extreme base station at low cost and have a couple of questions.

1. I'm on a dialup connection at home. Does that mean that I need to use an Airport Extreme base station with a modem and antenna port, or can I just use the standard one? (specs for both available at http://www.apple.com/airport/specs.html).

2. I don't have an Airport card yet, and my TiBook isn't Airport Extreme compatible. I will go and buy an Airport card if required - however I do have a D-Link Airplus Xtreme G card DWL-G650, which is a 2.4Ghz 802.11g wireless card. This does work with the TiBook courtesy of an Orangeware driver (http://www.orangeware.com/endusers/wirelessformac.html), and connects the TiBook to a D-Link Airplus Extreme G DI-624 wireless broadband router (tested this in work). However, what I want to know is, will this card work with my Tibook and the Airport Extreme base station? The specs state that macs need an Airport or Airport Extreme card to connect.

Gah, how excruciating that was to explain. Basically I may be able to get a cheap Airport Extreme base station and am praying it will work with my setup. Any clarification on this would be great. Thanks!

1.You will need the AEBS model with the modem and antenna ports to connect via dialup.

2.There shouldn't be any problem connecting to any standard 802.11g (or b) wireless network with that particular card (in theory, at least...).

I'm curious, how much of a discount are you getting on this basestation? I recently purchased a Netgear Wireless-G router for 80 bucks, $60 after rebate. That's not too shabby for a 4-port 100Mbit router with a built in firewall, very nice range, and easy to administer (via a standard web browser)... but it doesn't connect via modem (forgot about that). Now that I think about it, if you must connect via modem, the AEBS is your only option, that I know of.

There shouldn't be any problems. However, unless you'll be networked with other machines via the AEBS, you won't come anywhere near experiencing full 802.11g speeds.
