I want to move programs over to another computer, and hoped that linking by either firewire or ethernet cable would miraculously cause either machine to show the others' hardrive or something. No such luck.

What's the trick?

Thanks in advance.

Assuming both machines have FireWire, connect them together with a FireWire cable, reboot one of the machines and hold down the 'T' key immediately after you hear the chime. That machine's hard drive(s) should then appear on the other machine's desktop as a FireWire hard drive. Then, drag and drop away...

Another option is to log both computers into Rendezvous in iChat and transfer files that way. I do this a lot of times if I don't have a whole lot to transfer and I don't feel like restarting in target disk mode.

Hi.

this is a networking thread.

Following the firewire suggestion above is probably the easiest if you don't regularly need them both networked and on the internet at the same time.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

This works over firewire?

I've never tried it, but since 10.3 supports IP over firewire, I can't see why it wouldn't.
