have a powerbook G3 and a (sorry) sony vaio working with a netgear mr814, to a cable modem.

everything worked out of the box.

but i want to protect my network, add a password or encryption; where do i set that up?
checked system prefs: network pane (10.3.4); what am i missing?

ie where is this set up??

thanx!

Log into the Netgear's web page (probably at http://192.168.0.1 ), set a password for the router, and then make the security settings there. Be sure to copy the WEP key.

Then, when you try and log onto the wireless network, it should ask for the WEP key.

You don't have to use WEP. You can tell it to only allow computer with certain MAC addresses' to connect on the Netgear.

that page itself requires a username & password!
looked around netgears site, can't find a place to start..

any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if this is correct, but I think the default username and password is admin. Give it a try.

True enough and you don't have to remove the keys from your car and lock the doors, but.....

This page seems to do a thorough job of covering all the bases.

PS The default account for Netgear can be found in the user's guide, a quick and easy download from the Netgear site.

you should have something like a "quick setup guide" with the materials that come in the box. it should indicate what the default login is. for example, on linksys geat it is [usernamer:blank] and [password:admin].

at a bare minimum, this is what you need to do to secure you network:

1) rename the the device ssid
2) turn off ssid broadcasting
3) turn on wep at highest bit rate (should be at least 128 bit)
4) create a wep key and select the key index value
5) make sure it is not set to a pre-shared key (easy to hack)

this will require you to configure each client with a wireless connection using the ssid you created and inputting the wep key manually (since it is not shared).

if you want greater security you can use some of the newer protocols if your device supports them, like leap. this requires more technical configuration though, and it sounds like you don't want to do that.

do what is above and it makes it too challenging for most people to get into your network, unless they are already there

Hmmm a bit more hand holding.....

Try this page and select the correct router, then look for the User's guide... but don't you have this if you just purchased the router?

PS LM is correct, the default account (which should be changed) is ADMIN and PASSWORD.

Good luck...

Go to "Wireless Settings" then "Wireless Card Access List" after you have connected to the router already wirelessly then check just that device.
