I am sharing an internet connection with another computer, running it through a router.

I'd like to transfer files from one computer onto a third - I plug the third computer
into the router, but can't get either OTHER computer to see it.

Any ideas why I can't get them to talk?

tooki -

First, all Mac's software is up-to-date and current.

I plug my Powerbook into the router, try to Connect to Server and neither
computers can see each other.

Appletalk is on, file sharing is on...unless there's something about running
internet concurrently through a router, everything SHOULD work, correct?

Don't know how much more detailed to go...sorry to be vague.

Is the firewall on any/all the machines on? Is it allowing file sharing? Are all computers on same subnet (check the Networking pref pane)?
Try command + k from the finder and just type in the IP of the machine you want to connect to.

This is the most pertinent information:

IP configuration of all three machines. This means IP address, subnet, gateway, DNS servers, etc.

Firewall setup on all three machines (On or off, which services are open).

Is the router configured to do NAT, or is it a bridge?

The first step is to run ifconfig on each machine from the Terminal and paste the results in here.

Thank you to all for your offer of help.

However, the problem is solved.

In the future, if your ethernet plugs break off the little spring tab, please
be aware that they can slide in and out of their sockets easily and sometimes,
just enough so that wire connections are lost.

I know what you mean, and I HATE when that happens! Frustrating and embarassing. Glad you got it fixed.
