Okay, this is a spin off of the other thread I started, and I think my problem was really something else completely different.
Right now, I'm just trying to connect my iMac to my powerbook over ethernet and get them to share files. At one point it kind of worked for about 30 seconds, but now it doesn't work at all. Just an ethernet cable running between the two (tried multiple cables and even cross over). Both machines have File Sharing on. Both machines can see the other in the Servers folder. Any time I have one computer attempt to connect to the other:
from the iMac to the powerbook - iMac Finder locks up
from powerbook to iMac - that annoying waiting dialog (120 second countdown) on powerbook.
Now, I know they are communicating properly (sort of) because the powerbook knows what ip address I manually assigned the iMac (it shows up in the waiting dialog) and the computer name in the Servers folder is correct for both computer - so they are communicating. But I can't get one computer to connect to the other for the life of me.
My new guess - is there an issue with having a 10.3.0 machine connecting to a 10.3.4 machine? Just wondering if that sounds plausible...
