I know there are other options - anyone have experience with other brands of base stations? If so, which ones?

Also, what can be done to improve signal strength within a house? What things/items
interefer with signals?

I have an Airport base station, but you don't have to buy Apple base station. I have also used and like the Linksys WRT54G a lot. But you might also consider buying the the newer and less expensive Airport Express base station.

mine is the d-link di624. used to have an airport but sold it on ebay when i bought this. i had the snow airport which did not have 802.11g. this one does and it was $60 after rebate. it gets better reception than my airport did but was a little more work to configure but not bad.

I'm using a SMC modem/router/WLAN combination.
Works well.

Configuration might be a little trickier with 3rd party devices as compared to Apple's Airport. So if you have only little or no experience in networking, it might be a bit of a stretch. But it's not rocket science either...
