I currently own a Siemens Speedstream 2623 wireless router.

I have a Powerbook G4 and iBook G4 that I connect to the network.

I am planning to purchase an Apple Airport Express with the intention of using it to extend the range of my current wireless network.

I know Apple will only guarantee that the Airport Express will work with the Apple Airport.

Does anyone have any sense for whether or not this setup will work?

It will not work as a network extender. There is no standard for doing this (it was deliberately not written into the standard as the big networking companies did not want little guys horning in on their territory), so it only works with hardware from the same manufacturer. As Apple != Siemens, it will not work.

will not work as in... DEFINITELY will not work or may not work?

i have read articles that said that in general makers of wifi products will only promise that their products will work with their own but in reality, they are often compatible with each other.

worst case scenario... i buy an airport base station... just trying to avoid the cost if possible.

i guess i will find out for sure when the new toy arrives in mid july.

As a WiFi repeater, it will not work. No maybe's about it.

As a client (so that you can stream music through it) I would expect it to work fine, but have no real information on this.
