I'm using a Netgear WGR614 router and Airport Extreme card in a Powerbook. Both units have the latest software / firmware.
Whenever I use encryption / security of any sort on the router, the Powerbook can't use the network. Turn it off and there are no problems. The response is usually "There was an error joining the AirPort network ..."

I can use a Wintel XP box with WEP and no problems occur.
Any ideas what I can do to get the Powerbook going?

I've tried the password as hex and ascii in WEP and ascii in WPA modes. No luck.

I'm reading more and more about the question of whether Airport Express and Netgear wireless routers will work effectively together. Even the Netgear site mentions difficulties with Airport cards.

I'm wondering whether the WGT624 which is a later unit would work. I'm assuming I may have to try one out at a reseller and if it works, dump the WGR614. Hate wasting a perfectly good router that does everything (else) I need and the wasted expense.

The short answer is the WGR614v2 from Netgear doesn't work.

There is a fairly detailed discussion about this where I tried unsuccessfully to help a friend get his Netgear WGR614 to work at this url:

http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic751-0-asc-15.html

My friend finally gave up on this particular Netgear device and bought the expensive but reliable Airport Extreme and was up and running with his mixed PC/Mac machines in 5 minutes.

There are plenty of other vendors that make devices that work. Also, the non-wireless netgear boxes seem to work, too.

Good luck!

Paul
