Check this out:
No more standard AirPort cards
I had plans to restore an original iBook and an iMac and adding them to the home network, but looks like I'll have to go to eBay to do it, and I'm sure the prices will be on the rise there.
I'm not too happy about this. Seems to me there are plenty of machines that would benefit from these cards, especially with a good used Mac market and AirPort Express. Guess Apple disagrees.
Oh well . . .

FYI -- that's not a permalink, so it'll be dead by tomorrow.
Anyway, yeah, the original AirPort card is no more. That said, there are probably zillions of them still out there to be had, and apparently it will be available as a service part.

I went to local Fry's to pick up some; had them for $5 less for some reason. Also Amazon.com has them too (through JandR.com)

Just picked up a new one up at CompUSA for an old iBook. They seemed to still have plenty in stock.

Things seem to have changed a bit in the last month....
Just got a call from a friend of mine with a TiBook. I didn't even realize that the original AirPort cards had been discontinued, but after a quick search (Amazon, J&R, CompUSA, eBay, and Froogle), seems like they're extraordinarily hard to come by and ridiculously expensive if you can find one. Anyone have any hints? Or an old AirPort card they'd like to sell?
I do have an old graphite AirPort Base Station laying around —_might be a dumb question, but is there an AirPort card in there that can be removed and used in a Mac?

You might try looking over at the Lowend Mac Swap list. I bought an Airport card there not too long ago. I probably will be selling one there in the not too distant future too.

No, its a Lucent card in there. It won't fit in the Airport slot.

There's no need to rag on me and solo... I said that I don't think they'll become rare, and they haven't. There ARE dozens of them on eBay (though of course they're getting bid up excessively high in people's bidding frenzies), and as I've said in other threads, I don't think they'll become rare -- lots of the first Macs to use AirPort (e.g. original iBook, early G4's, Pismos, etc) are now reaching their retirement ages, and so no doubt many of them will be stripped and sold for parts -- including the AP cards.
I never said the prices would remain stable. My hunch is that once the first crowd of people panicking to buy cards is done shopping, the price will return to normal.

Fry's has them on the shelf in Houston, and I just ordered one from MacResQ a few weeks ago.

"Yeah, anyway" is pretty dismissive. No need to rag on me, either. My original post was about what I thought was going to happen, and lo and behold, I was right. At the time you and solo posted, I was pretty miffed that the only response I got was a collective whatever. I don't want to make a big deal out of this, but I thought your reply was rude.
The only thing I take back is the slam at Apple. Apparently, the parts needed to keep the cards in plentiful supply aren't available (at least I read this somewhere online, probably somewhere here)

I read this too, but I've forgotten where. I'll post a link if I find it again. Basically it said that manufacturers (OEM, not Apple per say) have basically stopped producing 802.11b chips in favor of 802.11g.
