Is their 108Mbps a proprietary way of achieving that speed?

Is it compatible with regular 802.11g network cards?

D-Llink's "108Mbps" protocol is quite proprietary, and not terribly backward compatible. Tooki, a forum moderator, says he had to completely disable this (or something like it on a different brand) just to get his Mac to connect to the base station properly. It is NOT an 802.11(X) standard.

There are several companies that are selling equipment they claim will give you twice the speed of the 802.11 standard you're using-but you have to buy their equipment for BOTH ENDS, and hope that there are drivers for the client for OSX (which will almost never be the case).

At up to 54Mbps, 802.11g should be fast enough for just about anything-you can stream media, share or move enormous files quickly, and multitask online without a glitch. There are few broadband services (for mere mortals, anyway) that go much faster than 6Mbps, so a theoretical 49Mbps of "unused bandwidth" awaits the "G" user.

Just stay away from proprietary stuff.

Indeed, I have a D-Link Di-624, and I have to completely disable the 108Mbps mode in order to reliably connect.

It's not specific to D-Link (the chipset is used by several brands), but as GHPorter said, it's not standard, and isn't supported by any Mac wireless card, anyway.

I had no troubles connecting to the D-Link application point version of the 108G hardware while in 108G mode. I was using a new PowerBook 12".

I had no trouble connecting, either. It was maintaining the connection that was a problem. After 3-4 days, it would refuse to re-connect after waking from sleep. Only resetting the router would fix it.
