i read through david pogue's excellent chapter on networking but still can't figure out what i'm doing wrong, other than not having one of my computers linked via cable into my router. so here is what i have:
one powerbook (with airport extreme, OS 10.3.4)
one ibook (with airport, OS 10.3.4)
one dlink di-624 (802.11g)
both 'books are wireless (neither one is connected to the router via cable), and i'm trying to get file sharing working, and if this isn't just ignorant on my part, print documents from my powerbook via the ibook that is connected to the printer). i don't have either 'book connected to the router via cable because it's in another room.
any suggestions?

Do you have "Share my printers with other computers" checked in Preferences on the iBook?

no, i don't. but the laptops don't even 'see' each other as available servers to connect to. i'm thinking that the only solution is getting an airport express and having on of the 'books teathered via ethernet.

Have you tried 'pinging' one computer from another using the Network Utilities app?

While I'm sure you've already done this, do you have Personal File Sharing checked on under Preferences/Sharing/Services on each of your computers?

i do, and i turned off the os x firewall in case that was an issue. i go to the finder, and do 'connect to server' but only get the local image showing up. i've been re-reading the info the help files and in pogue's book and i think the issue is that neither one of the computers is physically connected to the router.
is anyone here successfully doing wireless filesharing (look ma, no cables!) between two 'books via their wireless router? if it's just not possible then at least i can stop

Type in the IP address of the computer you're trying to connect to. Does it just hang?

I'd blame it on Panther initially (well, most of my Samba problems are with Panther). I'm surprised, though, that you're having trouble, since Rendezvous... er... OpenTalk should've kicked in, what with you're being wireless and all.

I use that same router, one AirPort Extreme Mac, one AirPort Mac, and one wired Mac.
I've had no troubles at all. So...
1. Are you actually connected to the wireless network? Can you use the internet?
2. Have you turned on all the sharing preferences for the services you want shared?
There is nothing more I could tell you -- for me, it all just works.
