i use it a great deal but have always wondered: if an application is using port 1234 to send out data, is it necessary to forward port 1234 back to that computer? or is port forwarding only needed when data will flow out of port 1234 and return to ports 1234, 1235 & 1236 (more than one port/a different port from the one data was initially sent from)?

It's only necessary when you need to accept incoming connections on that port.
