I have a G3/800 iBook, my partner has a G3 iMac and a LaCie firewire drive, and we share a DSL connection through a Linksys router.
Can I backup to her firewire drive?
I'm also planning on eventually upgrading to a G4 iBook, & want to be able to transfer the contents of my hard drive to the new book. Assuming there's enough room on the LaCie, is this a simple operation? I'm guessing that CCC would be the best software to use.
All tips greatly appreciated!

I'm pretty sure that the answer is yes.

Forget about the LaCie. Use Firewire target disk mode to transfer files from your old G3 iBook directly to your new G4 iBook.

Files, apps, prefs...everything? I would be moving from Jaguar to Panther (maybe even Tiger if I waited long enough ) so I guess I would have to update some applications, but the less of that I have to do, the happier I'll be.

From Mac Help:
Transferring files from your old Mac to your new one
The first time you turned on your new Mac, the Setup Assistant started up and may have asked if you wanted to transfer information from your existing Mac to your new one.
If you did not transfer your settings and files from your old Mac to your new one when you first set up your new Mac, you can use the Setup Assistant to transfer your information.
Locate the Setup Assistant in Applications/Utilities.
Open it and follow the onscreen instructions.
You can transfer all of the information from your old Mac to your new one, including network and account settings, files, and even applications. The Setup Assistant will walk you through connecting your Macs using a FireWire cable.
If you don't see the Setup Assistant in the Utilities folder, your computer might not support this.

Just remember to repair permissions right after doing the transfer.
