In trying to get a better grip on DNS and TCP/IP I am struggling to understand the concept of "canonical" names. I've looked on the Free Online Dictionary of Computing and I've not really gotten very far. I've also played with nslookup a little bit with hostnames of some of my servers thinking that it would be easier to understand what was meant by "canonical" as I'm fairly familiar with my servers, etc.

So what's the deal? I think I'm a little weak on my TCP/IP, ICMP, UDP all that junk. TCP/IP for dummies? Then in the next few years we'll see the implementation of IPv6 and then there's a whole new bunch of protocols and a whole new ballgame... not to mention an IP space of 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,45 6 IPs (340 Undecillion)...

Thanks
