After about 3 years of excellent, consistent service, my SMC 7004AWBR died. Since I needed a router with a built-in print server (I didn't want to pay ridiculous prices for a separate print server), my options were limited, and I bought a D-Link DI-714P+ from Newegg.

I'm having a very strange problem with wireless connectivity (the PC and Mac with wired connections are fine). A 12" Al PB with Airport Extreme keeps losing Internet connectivity, although the Airport signal itself is fine (full strength) and the computer retains its IP address (assigned by DHCP). I just can't browse websites, or ping, traceroute, etc. I have to turn off the Airport connection and turn it back on again, then it works. At the same time, another PowerBook (Wallstreet) with a Lucent card and running OS 9 seems to be doing just fine.

This is the exact setup that worked flawlessly with my SMC router before. I'm about to return the D-Link, but would appreciate any insights. I've used routers before that would periodically drop wireless connections, but have never seen this type of behavior (i.e., Airport signal at full strength but no Internet connectivity).

There is a setting in the DLink for Long Preamble. Probably in Advanced:Performance. Try turning it on. Also, make sure you are using the latest Airport software and have downloaded and installed the lastest DLink firmware.

Long Preamble was activated already, and I do have the latest firmware and Airport update. Maybe I just have a defective unit.
