I have a 2001 (I think G3-slate blue/gray tower) running 9.2.1. I may upgrade soon, but....

I have a new G4 powerbook 17" 1.5 running 10.3.5

I am not new to macs, but new to having more than one at a time, so want to connect the two in a simple network.

I also have Airport extreme base station connected to cable internet, so would love to have the high speed intternt available to more than just my powerbook, but that is another question.

I seem to be a dummy in this. I have the ethernet cable hooked up and have opened every control panel and pref pane that I could find on either comp, but no luck. I have searched here and checked the help menus and about to call Apple if you guys can;t help...

What settings do I have to input on the 9.2 box and the 10.3 box? Is normal ethernet okay or do I need crossover?

When I tried to use the chooser and IP address thingy it made Remote Access dialup my Earthlink (which I am hoping to ditch now that I have HSI)

Any help for clueless guy?

Well...I was able to network them by following this long and very unintuituive procedure from this website

http://homepage.mac.com/car1son/os9x...lesharing.html

it helped when I have the ethernet cable connected between the two computers, but it makes the OSX powerbook see my ethernet network fine, but disables the Airport network that I use for wireless internet and printing from my PB.

I would love to have the old 9.2 tower phyically connect to the Airport Extrme base. Then have the cable modem feed internet to both the 9.2 tower as well as the 10.3 powerbook wirelessly. Then have the PB and Tower also be networked via airport.

The Apple diagrams and instructions seem to assume both machines are 10.3? Still clueless.

You can definitely network OS 9 and OS X Macs. I don't have an AEBS, but I think it has a LAN port (for a wired connection). So you need the following setup:

cable modem--->WAN port of AEBS--->wireless to PowerBook

LAN port of AEBS--->G3 Mac

After you get all the network settings configured according to yourarticle, then turn on file sharing on the OS 9 Mac, and share whatever folders you choose (you can assign a password if you like). This is done in the "Users and Groups" settings when you do "Get Info" (Cmd-I) on a folder.

Then on your PowerBook, use "Connect to Server" (Cmd-K), and type in afp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where the Xs represent the IP address of your G3). Enter your password, if assigned, and away you go

Edit: If you need more info on configuring your network settings, the AEBS user manual should have a good description, or just post back here.
I do not like those green links and spam.
I do not like them, Sam I am.
