Hi,

I will be soon a new wireless user but I have couple of questions in mind:

- what is best? AirPort Express Base Station or AirPort Extreme Base Station

- I have a iBook G4 and I need a card, should I go Apple or try to save some $ in another Hardware?

- my girlfriend has a HP compaq nx 7010 with (from hp website) "Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection (802.11b/g) Wi-Fi technology". Is this compatible with an airport express?

thanks for your help guys!

For what?

Airport Express is fine if:

a) you don't need a 56K modem/fax

b) you don't need to connect a DSL or cable modem and a computer via Ethernet at the same time (since it only has one Ethernet port).

The Apple Airport Extreme card is the only one that will fit, so...

It's 802.11g, so it *should* be compatible, yes.

You know you don't need to buy an Apple wireless base station right?
You could get a Netgear, Linksys, etc.., wireless router and just use that.
Yes, you have to buy an APx card as was noted above. No 3rd party wireless card will fit in that slot.

thanks guys!

So I will go Apple.
As I am a dumb plain user, I wont risk anything else or waist a second with any setup!

Thanks again!

BTW what is your setup and how good (distance for example) does it works?

with my powerbook i just use a cheap netgear wireless router. can plug in four fcomputers via cat5, and wireless to boot .. your usage mayh vary with the router and reception, but if u are in need of some major range, check macnn's news section. they mentioned a router with six times the output as typical routers .. that might help boost range "a little bit" lol...

what about MacWireless High Power 11g Access Point?

http://www.macwireless.com/html/prod...11g_ap200.html

Sounds good on paper no?

And the price is competitive with Apple s products....

Any thoughts?

Seems like a ripoff to me.

You can get a D-Link DI-624 for about $70. Might not have the antenna power, but it puts the price in perspective.

Also: "PPPoE not supported. More information under Product Features."

WTF?

If you're thinking of getting - or have - ADSL, this thing is patently worthless, since you'll need an *additional* router that does support PPPoE.

That's odd. I saw the D-Link here in Germany for €70 - though I paid €149.

As is clearly described, all networking topics belong in the forum devoted to that topic.

OK sorry guys...
I was more thinking of the way I would have to deal with the thing "software-wise"...
So as I am now in the Network Dpt, I can ask my final $ 1000 question:
I can not move a "LAN" wire to my stereo, so I plan to buy 2 AirPortExpress!
One for the wireless internet and one for the stereo!
BUT, am I a dreamer? Is this possible?
Hook up my iBook to the first one (connected to the internet), controle iTunes (why not playing a radio) on the iBook and send the signal to be played on the second AirPortExpress linked to the stereo...???

Am I crazy?...
