I can't connect to the internet--I'm running on OS X.2.8, connected (directly, not wirelessly) to a D-Link wireless router, and then to a cable modem. My connectioin was working one night, and I may have left it on in a chat room and went to bed. I must have put to sleep at some point the next day and then the next night it wasn't connecting. I discovered this problem trying to publish my iCal calendar to my trial .Mac account, which required entering .Mac info into System Preferences. I dont know if it was before I lost my internet connect, but I got that kernal panic(?) greyed-out screen (where you have to hold down the power button to hard re-boot) at some point and I'm wondening if I could have done something to some OS files to cause this whole problem.
I've tried connecting directly to the cable modem, using another Mac OS X account, and we've exchanged cable modems, and still no dice.
The PC/Activity light is what isn't lighting up. The modem seems to be sending and receiving, but it isn't exchanging any packets with my computer.
I've worked with the cable company to reset my modem, power it up & down, do the same with the wireless router, etc.
Any one have any suggestions as to what to try next?

I would try removing the router and see if you can connect through just the modem.

I've tried that. Same problem--the PC/Activity doesn't light up.

Can you try another computer to see if the problem is with your machine or the modem?

Does the link light on your router light up when you plug in the cable from the Mac? If not, try a different cable.

I don know of a link light on my router. Where would I find that? (The only lights on the modem are POWER, SEND, RECEIVE, CABLE, PC). POWER and CABLE stay solid, RECEIVE and SEND will fluctuate...mostly being solid, and PC doens't come on at all.
I am going to try with my laptop now.
Thanks for the suggestions.

I am talking about the link lights on the D-Link router, not on the modem. Are there no lights on front of the D-Link?

I'm not in front of the router, but the lights that I'm used to seeing on (including either the LAN or the WLAN) aren't lighting up.
I connected my iBook directly into the modem last night and it a lighted up the PC light, so I'm wondering if there's something wrong with my eithernet connection or NIC card.
Does anyone know how to test this?
