I've got a problem with the graphite base station my parents have had for years. Although I've seen this page on Apple Support, it doesn't give a reason for the following activity:

On power on, all three LEDs glow amber for about four seconds. Then centre and right go off and the left LED glows continuous red for about four seconds, amber for two and then all three go off. Then the cycle repeats as if I've just turned the power on again.

What's going on? Is it knackered? It's well outside warranty...

Try this page:

http://www.vonwentzel.net/ABS/

It's where I got the information on how to fix the common power supply problem with these units. If you know somebody who is handy with a soldering iron, it's a relatively easy fix, and doesn't cost that much to try. Mine was giving similar but not exactly the same LED readings. There are other things that can go wrong with these units, but it's mostly the power supplies.

Thanks Val - that page looks very useful!
I'll let you know how I get on, I'm a bit nifty with a soldering iron...

I've fixed a couple of these now. Both of which had faulty power supplies. There are 2 power regulating capacitors inside that fail. It can be a little tricky to source the correct ones as there is zero space to install larger ones, which most caps of the same value are.. Oh, and the PCB is the print through type, which makes unsoldering a bit tricky, but certainly not impossible.
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

I'm a novice at soldering, and I was able to replace these two capacitors on my old base station a couple years ago. Its not too hard at all. I was able to mail order a few of these caps for a total of around $12 or so (bought extras in case I screwed up).

I'm amazed yours lasted this long. Mine died at 14 months of age.

I'm pleased to report that a pair of long-life high temperature capacitors cost me 14p each from Maplin in the UK, took about half an hour of desoldering and resoldering to fit, and the graphite ABS now works perfectly. I actually bought caps that were a little too large, necessitating a bit of filing away at the inside of the outer casing but as I followed other links from the above site and enabled passive cooling for the ABS at the same time, this wasn't really a problem.

I now have a fully working and nicely cooled ABS - thanks guys!
