Was at a coffee place today that I stop by on a regular basis. Don't know their equipment, but I log in with their business name and a simple password (ten "1's"). I go often enough to have a location in Network named after them. I just select that one and hit "Apply Now" and it's on.
Watched as another Apple user tried in frustration to connect wirelessly and then with a wired connection (they have a few ethernet cables sitting on table tops) but with no luck on either.
I have an old clamshell running 1.2.?; he had a tiny silver thing (PowerBook maybe? could have been an iBook. I didn't look close) and was also running 10.2.?.
The Airport card would see the cafe network (and another one nearby) but when the password was entered it would be rejected as the wrong one. They have not changed their password since I set my profile up (I re-entered the password manually and it worked for me) and I watched him enter the password correctly (and with caps OFF). This machine would also not connect when the ethernet cable was used. Don't remember if there is a password for this setup.
I set the two machines up side by side and tried to configure his "Network" settings to be just like mine Airport wise but it just wouldn't connect. It never shows that it is getting a valid IP address.
He said that there is another cafe that he can connect at but I suspect that maybe there is no password required there.
I'll probably never run into this guy again (I told him to try one of the local Apple stores for some quick help) but what did I miss? If there is some sort of password block or something I thankfully never had to deal with it.
