We recently acquired a Ruby iMac DV (late 2000). I upgraded the memory to 320MB, the OS to 9.2.1 and added a new keyboard.

We have two other Mac's and a PC laptop using a Linksys Wireless 4 port router to access a cable connection. All are currently wired and wireless is off. We'd like to add Ruby to the net.

Unfortunately Airport Cards for the old iMac are discontinued. Running a wired Ethernet drop will be a real problem (different floor of the home).

What are our choices? Netgear makes a USB wireless 802.11b adapter. They have them at Compusa for $10. Do they work on the iMac with no special software?

Is it possible to set up another wireless router and bridge it somehow to the one we already have?

Suggestions?

Regards and thanks in advance

For $10, you should probably just get one and see if it works. I know some people DO make USB Wireless that works for Macs. Also you can get Wireless Ethernet bridges that are browser configured and basically are like the opposite of a wireless base station. Because you have a wireless router, and not a true wireless access point, you probably can't use another access point to bridge.

What he said.

Many people, however, find USB wireless devices problematical. Your better be might be a LinkSys WET11 wireless-to-ethernet bridge for about $55. It requires no drivers and therefore will not become obsolete if you upgrade your system software to something incompatible with your old drivers. It is also "always on" so you won't have problems that you do with USB devices which have to connect afresh each time you reboot.

LinkSys WET11 - $55

Yeah I'd go with the Wireless Bridge under most circumstances, but for $10, it would be worth it to go USB even if it does go obsolete in a year. These two USB ones have rebates, but are still about $30.
Netgear
Linksys

The problem with wireless bridges is that they are expensive. That $55 link doesn't work, but amazon has a few.
