It's funny but once I took an Orinoco Silver PC Card and plunked it at a funny angle inside of a clamshell iBook. Granted, you couldn't reattach the keyboard (it was off to the side) but the card worked! It used the Orinoco's own antenna (there is no way to look it to the iBook's antenna, via a little cable dangling right behind it).
From fooling with this, it was clear it was the card's antenna that prevented it from fitting properly. Electronically everything worked well, and I could surf the Web wirelessly. If someone could lop off the antenna and find a way to connect it to the iBook's antenna cable, the thing would work just fine! Granted, this is more than a $100 worth of effort for someone like me, but it is possible...a project for the brave.
Keep in mind that other PC cards may not work! Orinoco cards work because Apple codeveloped Airport with Lucent, the original manufacturer of the Orinoco line. Orinoco cards are completely compatible with Apple's own drivers.
Would this work?
