I have a small home network with a Netgear wireless router. A flat-panel iMac running 10.3.5 has an external FW harddrive. I can mount this hd on my 667 mhz Powerbook, also running 10.3.5. However, when I try to copy files from the PB to the FW harddrive, I get a message saying that "the item cannot be moved because <the hd> cannot be modified".

I assumed that this was a permissions problem, so I went to the iMac and altered the FW disk's permissions in the Get Info window to give the PB read/write access. Unfortunately, the problem remains. Anybody have any ideas? I was hoping to set up a Master backup strategy for this network and my office network utilizing external FW drives, and I'm stumped.

I'm pretty sure this is a permissions problem. I have a similar setup, with an external firewire drive on my old sawtooth server, and two powerbooks. I mount and copy back and forth regularly.

You say you've made the drive read/write from the imac, but does your user account have the same read/write access? Hopefully someone will come up with the details for you, but it can definitely be done.

Also try checking the 'Ignore Permission on this Volume' box in Get Info.
