I'm having no end of trouble.

Our cable modem is plugged into my Graphite base station. It has DHCP and NAT running (only on wireless), and my Mac can use the net fine.

Flatmate has a PC with a Belkin 802.11g network card. It refuses to connect.

I got it to see the network, and it claims to connect to it - but it can't obtain an IP address. (Yes, it is set to use DHCP.) Sometimes it invents one à la Rendezvous, and sometimes it just takes 0.0.0.0. So it can't use the net at all.

There's no security on the network. I'm going to get it working first, then add that.

Any ideas?

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.
