so today i started having this strange problem. i have my cable modem run into a dlink 802.11b router (to send the signal to my roomates). and hard wired from my router into my powerbook. when i try to access the internet with this configuration, it wont allow. my network status shows an ip address and all looks correct. so initially i thought it was a network problem. however i try to use airport to get on...... nope, nothing. however if i go directly from the moden to my laptop, totally bypassing the router, i can get a connection. i have tried all 4 ports on my router, and none offer a connection.
so really at this point i'm stuck. can figure anything out. i actually wiped and reinstalled everything on my hd.
could it possibly have something to do with my roomate connecting on the network? he is running xp, could it somehow be shutting me out? because when i am hardwired he has no acessing.
any suggestions would be awesome.
thanks,
jersey

Exactly what IP address are you getting when you are hardwired? If it begins with 169 it is not a valid address.

hard wired gives an ip that begins with a 68. thats whats odd. if iot wasnt valid, why would it allow me to connect?
thinking about doing a complete wipe and reinstall.

Check the end wiring of the ethernet cable you are using to connect the Mac to the router with against the wiring diagram found here:

And check to make sure that DHCP and NAT serving are enabled in the router. No need to reinstall; the problem is not in your computer.

yeah.....it was the d-link. i consulted my friend / school IT guy he said the problem is always the d-link. it seems after a firmware upgrade, they will just decide to quit working for macs. he has tried to use one, and wont allow d-link into the building for wireless connection because of this problem. he recomended netgear, and sure enough came home and fired up a new netgear, and have no problems.
thanks for all the help.
but i still did the reinstall. the powerbook needed a good cleaning.

If your problem was a wireless connection to the DLink, you likely needed to reset the DLink settings from Short Preamble to Long Preable under the Advanced erformance tab.
If it was a wired problem and you had MAC address filtering set up, you have to remember to enter the wired MAC address as well.
I and friends have had several DLinks which have had no problems with Macs at all, although I have found their range to be disappointing compared to an SMC I had.

Use your web browser to go to the DLink Admin Utility from a connected computer. I think the Admin Utility is at http://192.168.0.1 if I remember correctly. Check your manual.
