is is neccesary to run Virtual PC or equivalent to network with PC's?
Or, can you just enable file sharing and go from there (I am using a peer to peer network)?

No VPC required (if you're running OS X) - just turn on SMB sharing (and turn on file sharing on your PC) and you should be good to go.

If you are running OS X, go to http://www.joelshoemaker.com and check the links at the left margin of the page for detailed instructions on Mac/PC file sharing.
