I have a few questions, for those with the know, about purchasing certain items for my iBook. First, I have an ivory iBook 800mhz w/256RAM(128 installed + 128 additional), 30G HD and running OSX.2.8 Any guidance on any and/or all of my inquiries is most appreciated. Here is my list of questions:
I want to go wireless with my OnLine experience but I not sure what
all I need in the way of equipment and which is the best/most in-
expensive product to buy. Anyone have any suggestions. I live in a
one bedroom place so I don't need to have long range but I would
like the option to go long when and if I ever needed to. I
would also like to make my printer and other peripherals wireless so
I'd like whatever I purchase to have that option as well.
If I could get a list of exactly what hardware I need to go wireless that would be fantastic. I use an 800mhz G3 Ivory iBook, 256RAM 30G HD. I am running OSX.2.8 at the present. My internet connection is DSL through a Westgate modem via an ethernet line.
Thanks for any and all suggestions/guidance that you can give me.
Macs ROCK !!! Peace Out . . .

1) Get an Airport card for your iBook.
Ivory iBook ? You mean the white iBook (Dual USB), I guess.
You'll need to get an OLD Airport card, NOT the Airport Extreme.
Check on eBay. There are supposedly also other stores that still sell the old ones. Be prepared for a hefty premium charge on that.
2) For the "Base Station", you have basically two options.
a) Apple's Airport Extreme or Express, I'd say the Express should do you just fine. http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/
b) any el cheapo Wireless Router should work, as long as you are savvy enough to configure them through a web interface. Is not too hard.

Thanks for the heads up. the only card I should get is an old airport card. Why can't I get an airport extreme card? What about Non-Apple brands like Belkin routers or a Linsky WRT54G Wireless router. From searching around OnLine, I have noticed that many of our Mac collegues purchase the Linsky router. Wonder why? Any more advice given is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

When Apple built the new iBooks, they changed the socket from one that supported the original AirPort card to one that only supports the new one. The original card was a modified PCMCIA card (NO, you can't use just any wireless PCMCIA card in your Mac), while the AirPort Extreme card is a mini-PCI formfactor card (I dunno if you can use any other mini-PCI card here).
Your original post is a little vague on which model of iBook you have. A more complete description would make it easier to help you out.

Ok, I thought you had the "old" iBook with the old Airport card.
Just make sure what iBook you have. In case of doubt what you would need, call Apple.
As for the routers, Belkin routers or the Linsky WRT54G Wireless router work without a problem, if you know how to set them up properly (via web interface).

YOU MACSTERS ROCK !!! Thank you one and all for your guidance on choosing a wireless router. I went ahead and purchased a NETGEAR wireless router and so far its performance is outstanding. I would recommend the NETGEAR WGR614 Wireless Router to anyone beginnig their wireless experience. It was inexpensive and it does exactly what you want it too. I had to purchase an airport car from Apple which was rather steep in price but it's quality and worth the price. Peace Out . . .
