My Mac Mini will be delivered on the 16th of Februaury (huzzah!), so I've been wondering what the best path to moving my data off my XP machine is? My current PC is on a wired network, although I have an 802.11b card kicking around somewhere if that's a better option. The Mac of course has an Exteme card. Most of my data is already on external Firewire/USB2 storage, but I want to be able to easily drag stuff over from the PC. I guess I have the following options:

Add wireless temporarily to my PC.
Plug my PC into the AE base station.
Use a crossover cable between the Mac and PC.
Firewire networking? This work?

Is this stuff easy to set up on a Mac? I guess it is. Firewall'll no doubt need some tweaks. Anyone got any other hints/recommendations. My username may give you a hint, but it's been a while since I've been a Mac user (started on a Mac 512, still got an LC in the attic!).

Thanks!

I'd go with the direct ethernet connection, and I bet the Mini's ethernet card will autodetect whatever cable you use.

You'll have to manually assign both machines an IP and subnet that are compatible (i.e. 192.168.1.1 and 255.255.255.0 on one and 192.168.1.2 and 255.255.255.0 on the other), and enable file sharing on both as well. I've found that it is easier (for me anyway) to move files from the Windows side rather than from the Mac side-dunno why it is.

It is very easy to set this sort of thing up on OS X. I (er hem) really got started with Macs on OS X. (I don't count the IIe I used at work in 1983...) Before that I'd fought with Windows and DOS forever; OS X makes it very easy to do just about any system-level configuration change. You WILL have to provide your admin password when making some of these changes, but that's OK.

OK, cheers, I'll give the crossover cable a try. I guess I can maybe tell MacOS to trust that connection, and not worry about firewalling it? Is there some kind of way to share out a Mac disk and then mount it on the PC or vice versa? Samba?

Look here and here for instructions on sharing Windows machines and Macs respectively.
