I've read posts suggesting that you can buy one of those cheapo USB 802.11b adapters with OS X (latest version - Panther). Is this true? Does it need to be a specific brand?

Thanks much,

What you need for it to work is a Mac OS driver. These are sorely lacking for many types of wireless networking equipment, and apparently moreso with USB devices.

If you see one you like, check with the manufacturer to see if they provide a Mac driver. If they do, you've hit the jackpot. If not, keep looking.

There's no hardware issue at all; it's all whether or not there's driver software that will work.

The Belkin F5D6050 802.11b Wireless USB should work.
The drivers are downloadable here

Check some other manufacturers sites, like D-Link or Netgear etc.

What about "TrendNet"? Any experience with those?

Never heard of them. I personally would stick with a more well known brand. Here is the Belkin one for only US$18.95. Even if you could get the TrendNet one for cheaper I doubt the difference would be worth it.
Also check on Froogle

Yeah, I looked at the 802.11g adapters, but what about the drivers needed for mac? I looked them up and they didn't appear to have drivers for mac. Im trying to get wireless internet for my iMac G4... and you know they stopped making wireless cards for them.

Currently I don't believe there are any "g" USB wireless products that have Mac drivers yet. I've heard rumors that D-Link is working on a "g" version, and since they have OS X drivers for the "b" version people have guessed there will be an OS X "g" driver when the "g" USB device is released.

If its time sensitive you get wireless to this computer and it at least has an Ethernet port, you could always just buy a wireless to wired bridge. They don't require any drivers because they will use your computer's Ethernet port. It is a more expensive solution, but it is one that is pretty much guaranteed to work, and work at good and reliable speeds.

The D-Link DWL-122 I linked to above has Mac OS X drivers. I agree the Ethernet option would be much better.
