Hi
I'm having some frustrating problems trying to get a decent local network setup for my home-based office.
I have two Macs (G4s) running OS 10.3.x and a new laptop running windows xp. The windows machine is running wirelessly from my Buffalo Airstation Router, as is the G4 (mirrored doors). The other G4 is connected via ethernet to the router, as is my Xante Accel-a-Writer 4G printer. The older of my G4s I want to act as a file server with the Windows Laptop and G4 (mirrored doors) pulling/pushing files from and to it. I am having the following problems:
I do not seem to be able to connect to the printer from the PC without going 'through' the G4 (mirrored doors). Why not? It is not connected to that machine it is connected to the router? Despite having the IP address from the printer the PC simply cannot find it. (i have obviously installed the correct drivers etc) However on the mac it shows up in the chooser on OS9 and OS X finds it no problem.
When I select 'network' from the 'Go' menu on the older G4 (which is ethernet connected) I get a folder which relates a workgroup that I set up on the PC. However the wireless G4 (mirrored doors) does not see this folder?! Why not!? I cannot connect this mac to the PC for this reason. How do you get a Mac to become part of a PC 'Workgroup' anyway!?
When I connect from G4 (Mirrored doors) to the other G4 I can see all volumes (additional internal hard disk in two partitions, plus connected external hard drive). However when I connect to this G4 from the PC I can only connect to the contents of my 'user' folders and not all the other stuff. This is a problem because all my files are on the additional internal hard disk.
In Summary I thought having windows XP and OS X would make all this stuff easy, but inevitably it is complicated - particularly on the windows side of things because I'm not that experienced with windows. There seems to be a difference when hardware is wireless or wired even though it is all going through the same router.
Sorry for the long post but if anyone could help with all/some of these issues I'd be very grateful.
thanks.
