OK, a friend of mine has a test on this in a couple of days. I do not know networking much at all. Here it goes. What three things must be in place for a gigabit network. We are guessing a switch capable of that speed, CAT 5 cable, ethernet cards in the stations capable of that speed, and we also thought the server would play a part. We are probably totally wrong. Help please

Yep, almost totally wrong. You need Cat6 cable, not Cat5, and no server is needed; just a switch capable of gigabit speeds, and gigabit cards in each computer, with everything connected via Cat6 cable.
Some levels of Cat5 cable can be used at near gigabit speeds, but the standard is Cat6-it was developed for gigabit networking.
Oh, and tell him to crack the books. It does not appear that your friend has done so. After as many years behind the lectern as I've had, I just cannot fail to say that. Study. It's worth it.

Jlemons: please don't cross-post in multiple forums. If you want us to move a thread, ask us, but we don't like multiple threads.
Glenn: Actually, Cat 6 didn't even exist when GigE was defined. A well-done four-pair Cat 5 installation is all that the standard requires. Cat 5e is recommended, but not required.

Sorry Tooki, I just needed an answer so quickly. I posted in the Lounge first and was told that I would have better luck here so I just went ahead and tried it. Sorry

Oops. I read the Cat6 specs a long time ago, and made an assumption today.
I still say that Jlemmons' friend should hit the books and not ask someone online to help him out with a test. Kinda makes me wonder what kind of test it was; college, ITT Tech, or some pre-certification course? Hmmm.
