I'm trying to connect an older Mac to my new Linksys wired router along with my iMac G4, 10.3.7. I have a DSL SBC Westell Wirespeed modem and have an ethernet cord connecting to the Linksys router. My main computer is hooked into the router and does connect to the net. My second computer (an older Power Mac on 9.1) will not connect although a green light shows on the router.
I need help on the correct settings for the TCP/IP panels for the 9.1 and the OS10 Most likely the older computer is not set correctly. This is what I have at this point. I have made many changings to no avail. The two panels look quite different and I'm not sure how to make them the same.
9.1
Configure Manually
IP Address: 192.168.1.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router Address 192.168.1.1

10.3.7
Configure PPP, IP address: 64.175.245.89
"Connect using PPPoE" is checked with Account Name and Password filled in.
Apple Talk is NOT on on either mac.

You need to set up your Linksys to connect to the DSL modem for you. Then your Macs should both be set to DHCP and talk to the Linksys, which will forward everything to the modem for you.

In Mac OS 9 set your connection to DHCP in the TCP/IP control panel.

In OS X, do the same in the Network Preference Pane.

Your config for the Linksys should look something like this:

you will understand why I dismiss yours." - Stephen F. Roberts

Thanks for the tips olePigeon. Okay, I set both computers to connect DHCP. In Linksys setup page I selected PPPoE but not sure about the user name and password. I tried the SBC name and password and when that didn't work I tried skipping the name and inserting "Admin". Each time the ID box came up and then I tried both ways again and each time got the RED not authorized page. Can you give me more direction?

After you select PPPoE in the pull down menu, the name and password should be exactly the same as you would enter for your modem:

YourAccountNameHere@sbcglobal.net
YourPassword

Don't forget the "@sbcglobla.net" part, that's part of your login/name.

Oh, and one more thing. Make sure your DSL modem is connected to the Linksys correctly. An ethernet cable should go directly from your DSL modem to the (I think) "Internet" port on the back of your Linksys.

I entered my SBC user name and password and when I click on Save Settings it brings up the "Enter Network Password Window" Is that right? When cancelling it the darn Red page comes up. I am using an ethernet cable from the dsl modem to the router. There must be something I'm still doing wrong. Any ideas?

I'm trying to figure out what the Network Password Window is. I've never encountered that.

Can you list the steps you did to get to connect to your Linksys router?

This is how I get there:

1) Open up Safari
2) Type in 192.168.1.1 in the URL field.
3) A window will slide down asking for login and password, just type in the password (there is no login for Linksys.) I think the default password is just "admin" (without the quotes.)

That should load the Linksys configuration webpage. From there you fill in the necessary stuff.

Just FYI, you should continue using Safari and avoid IE unless you absolutely have to use it.

Cheers.
